On Thursday, 9/26, Columbus County Schools' Autism Support Team attended NC DPI's Fall Autism Support Team meeting in Lillington, NC. It was a valuable day of learning and planning. This is an energetic group of educators who share a common goal of providing evidence-based supports and services for each one of our students on the Autism Spectrum.

At TCS, a mad mathematician locked all of Ms. Tart’s classes in her classroom on Thursday. In order to escape, groups had to use their skills with quadrilaterals to solve math problems and critical thinking skills to figure out puzzles to retrieve the key to break out of the classroom. Luckily all students made it out just in time!

Hallsboro-Artesia Elementary School is about to embark on a school-wide book drive unlike any other! Starting on Thursday, October 3, 2024, the school will launch their Books Are Fun Book Blast. This literacy initiative helps our students build their home libraries while also helping the school to get more books and school supplies. No matter what, this program ensures all the students at the school will take home at least one new, fun, age-appropriate book for their home libraries. However, with the help of the community, friends, and family, students can earn up to 10 books! How does this all work? Students send out invitations to friends and family members to help them reach their goal of taking home all 10 books on their grade-level list. So, if you receive an invitation from a student you know, please click on the link in the invitation and help that child by contributing on their personal contribution page. 100% of the contributions they receive first go towards the books on their book list and then help other students needing books too. Any remaining contributions after every student earns all 10 books will go toward more books for the school and classroom supplies. Let’s help Hallsboro-Artesia Elementary School reach their goal of every student taking home all 10 books! If you don’t know a student at the school or receive an invitation to contribute, but you’d still like to help all students at Hallsboro-Artesia Elementary School take home more books, you can contribute at: https://tinyurl.com/Hallsboro-ArtesiaESCommLink

At TCS, Ms. Tart’s 6th Grade math students put their area skills to the test today in a “Matho” (math version of Bingo) competition today. The students were asked to look at the picture of a polygon and calculate the area. The interactive word wall was key for students who needed a reminder of the formulas and a multiplication chart was provided for students who needed fact reinforcement. Brook and Sophia reign supreme in the end! Winners took home a Walmart gift card ☺️

At TCS, Ms. Williamson’s 8th grade ELA class worked together to answer text dependent question after annotating the text, “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson. Students were tasked to work together to get each answer correct before moving on. Groups that got each answer correctly, were able to put their group number into a lottery square for the final drawing to win a prize. Students used various strategies to work together while working in a timely manner to beat the clock!
